About Files and File Setup

Q. What is your bleed? What is bleed?
A. Lorraine Press requests bleed to be 1/8 of an inch over the final trim size of your document. If you want an image to go to the edge of your printed piece, then you need bleed, which is extending your picture past the edge of your document to allow for trimming.
Q. How can I be sure that I have given you all the components you need to do my job?
A. There are many preflight programs that will tell you all the pieces you need to support your job. Some of them will package your project up for you too. Using one of these programs is the best way to ensure your complete job comes to Lorraine Press.
Q. Where are the fonts located on my PC so I can send them to you?
A. Fonts on a Windows PC are usually located on the C drive in the Windows folder, in the Fonts folder.
Q. Can I use d.fonts?
A. d.fonts are meant to be system fonts on a computer, for viewing on screen only. Using them in a piece to be printed is risky, because they may not print out the way they look on screen.
Q. What does spot color and four color process mean?
A. Four color process printing uses four inks: cyan, magenta, yellow, black. These four inks can create many colors on a printed page. However, some clients prefer to use a specific color, such as for logos, or corporate colors. A spot color can then be used. This is a specific color that is chosen, not made out of the four process inks. Spot colors can be added to a four color process job, making it a five or six color job.
Q. What is a pdf, and how do I make one?
A. A Portable Document Format is a file format that Adobe created so documents could be shared over a wide range of computers. Adobe Acrobat Reader is free, and available for download on the Adobe Website. Acrobat Reader allows a user to view and print pdfs. Acrobat Distiller is used to create a pdf, and is a part of the Adobe Acrobat program. Various settings are used depending on how the pdf is to be used. There are other programs and ways to create a pdf. So far, Adobe Distiller has proven the most reliable, though.
Q. Can you extract my photo out of the background it is currently in to make it appear as though it is floating in a new background?
A. Yes, we can do this.
Q. Do I need a color profile?
A. Lorraine Press has color calibrated its entire printing process. We don't need you to include a color profile with your files because we use our own profiles.
Q. Why do I need to login?
A. Once you login, you will have access to many features of our website that aren't available to everyone. Clients who login are able to upload files, see a catalog of previous jobs, order and reorder jobs, and much more. We encourage all our clients to use these expanded features.
